What is ISTDP?

Britton Noel, LCMHC, LCAS

ISTDP stands for Intensive Short-term Dynamic Psychotherapy. It is a type of therapy that has been shown to be effective for a wide range of mental health issues – and it is mouthful to say! Since I am currently training in this modality, I want to share this link that gives a brief overview. I hope you will read the article to learn more about the approach.

A few things about my relationship to ISTDP

  • I have been training intensively since Fall 2023. I am part of a 3-year core training and attend additional workshops and supervisions on a regular basis.
  • I incorporate confidential video recording, with permission of clients. This is a staple of ISTDP and allows me to review and refine my work as a therapist.
  • I consider myself at this point to be an “ISTDP-informed” therapist, which means I utilize other therapeutic methods as deemed appropriate.
  • I believe ISTDP is to be a potentially powerful form of therapy.

Enjoy!
